A provider should never say "Your quad screen came back positive." What they should say is "Your quad screen came back with an elevated risk, so we'd like to investigate further to see if there's a problem. What you can have is a healthcare provider who is too fucking stupid to explain this to people who don't already know the difference between a screening test and a diagnostic test. There is 0 risk of false positives because it is impossible to have a positive on this screening test. ![]() Looks pretty boyish down there:ĮDIT: Whoops. I've already had a freaking gender reveal party!! The ultrasound tech told me she was confident that it was a boy during my anatomy scan and I even have this ultrasound, in case you all are curious. The midwife read my ultrasound report to me (which, for some reason didn't include images) and the doctor reported that I was having a girl. Which brings me to the second part of the title. There's no bullshit of "testing positive." They're 99% accurate and you can know the gender for sure. Second, why the hell do midwives/OBs bother with this test? Genetic tests, like MaterniT21 and Harmony, are far more accurate (I originally thought the quad screen WAS a genetic test until the night before my blood draw when I Googled it.TIL I need to ask more questions during my appointments) and require the same substance: a vial of blood. Especially since my office's cutoff for normal is 1:270.įirst, there are only a few conditions I can think of where "testing positive/negative" should be used as a phrase when discussing results and this screening is not one of them. ![]() Soooo.less than a 0.5% chance? Pardon me, but I'm not jumping on the hysteria wagon just yet. My heart skipped several beats until she told me the results: 1:261 chance. I got a call yesterday afternoon from a midwife in my practice informing that I "tested positive" in the quad screen for Down Syndrome.
